A late Victorian antique print of “The Dead Sea Gull” by Myles Birket Foster.

The scene depicts a group of children gathered around a dead seagull on the shore, creating a quietly narrative and nostalgic atmosphere. Myles Birket Foster was one of the leading British watercolour artists of the 19th century, celebrated for his sentimental depictions of children, countryside scenes, and coastal landscapes.

Although the overall palette is soft and muted, the sea still retains a beautiful sense of clarity and colour. The print is presented in a gold paper mount, with the title written below in decorative blue lettering, adding to its antique charm.

The lower half of the print is slightly lifting from the mount. Along the lower edge of the print, the name of the publisher, Hildesheimer & Co., as well as what appears to be a serial number, can be seen. In order to preserve the piece in its original state, it has intentionally been left unrestored and is offered as found.

  • The print shows some light age-related discolouration and tonal variation. The mount shows age-related wear, marks, and areas of paper loss, and the lower edge of the print is slightly lifting from the mount. There is also age-related wear and paper loss to the reverse. Otherwise, it remains in very good condition.

    ヴィクトリアン後期頃のマイルズ・バーケット・フォスターの “The Dead Sea Gull” のアンティークプリント。

    海辺で死んだカモメを囲む子どもたちの姿が描かれた、どこか物語性を感じる作品です。Myles Birket Foster は19世紀イギリスを代表する水彩画家のひとりで、子どもや田園、海辺の情景を描いたノスタルジックな作品で人気を集めました。

    全体的に柔らかな色彩ですが、海の透明感は美しく、今も綺麗な発色を残しています。ゴールドの厚紙マウントで飾られており、ブルーの飾り文字で入ったタイトルも印象的です。

    プリントは下半分ほどがマウントから少し浮いています。プリント下部には Hildesheimer & Co. 社の名前と、シリアルナンバーと思われる記載が見られます。オリジナルの状態を尊重し、あえて修復は行わず、このままの状態でご紹介いたします。
